Reverse Long-distance Dependency and Functional Uncertainty - The Interpretation of Mandarin Questions

چکیده

Mandarin Chinese WH-questions exhibit two syntactically interesting characteristics. First, WH-words that bear interrogative information always occur in situ. Second, in spite the above fact, I find that Mandarin WH-questions, with bounded WH-words, share the grammatical behaviors common to questions with unbounded and dislocated WH-words in other languages. Hence, intuitively, an account of Mandarin WH-questions should involve mechanisms for unbounded dependencies but, crucially, involve no unbounded syntactic manipulation. Accordingly, I propose an interpretative mechanism for Mandarin WH-questions based on the mechanism of Functional Uncertainty in LFG (Kaplan and Zaenen 1989, and Dalrymple 1990).

A Unification-based Approach to Mandarin Questions

This paper providers unification-based GPSG and LFG analyses of Mandarin questions. First, we briefly introduce four kinds of Mandarin question, namely, WH-questions, A-not-A questions, disjunctive questions, and particle questions. Their different interrogative messages are adequately encoded with different feature-value pairs. Then, the compatibility of this interrogative information in a sim...

A Broad-Coverage, Representationally Minimalist LFG-like Parser: Chunks and F-Structures Are Enough

Tesnière’s concept of Functional Dependency Grammar can be seen as a monostratal LFG that only knows F-structure. Combining Frank’s projection of F-structures from chunks model with statistical techniques we build a parser that outputs LFG F-structure like structures, is representationally minimalist, combines shallow and deep analysis, is deep-linguistic, robust, fast, psycholinguistically pla...

NIOC’s requirements for data processing and interpretation in challenging geological environment

The time for easy oil discovery and production for National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) is over. This means that the oil is no longer discovered in structurally simple, i.e., almost flat environments like south of Khuzestan province (south west of Iran). This comes along with the fact that Iran’s biggest oil reservoirs are in this area, and they are passing half of their life cycle. These giant ...

Modeling of Long Distance Context Dependency

Ngram models are simple in language modeling and have been successfully used in speech recognition and other tasks. However, they can only capture the short distance context dependency within an n-words window where currently the largest practical n for a natural language is three while much of the context dependency in a natural language occurs beyond a three words window. In order to incorpor...
